Playing with Purpose
His Journey Begins Here
Your son’s lifelong learning journey begins in our Early Learning Community (ELC), catering for students from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2. This all-boy setting provides a nurturing and vibrant start to schooling, embracing the unique educational needs of boys. The School fosters a safe and welcoming environment where students develop their first sense of belonging to the wider Christ Church community.
Phases of Learning
Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 is the first of three phases of learning in the Preparatory School. Each phase provides opportunities for cognitive, social and emotional, creative and physical development, and articulates the actions teachers will take to ensure opportunities are provided and the required level of learning and understanding is attained.
-
Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 - Playing with Purpose
He explores, discovers, questions and belongs in a secure and nurturing environment.
The School’s ELC programs are developmentally appropriate, concept and skills-based, and reflect the interests of boys while still being guided by mandated by Early Years Learning Framework (Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2), Western Australian Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines and the Western Australian Curriculum (Pre-Primary to Year 10).
-
Years 3 to 4 - Building his love for Learning
He reasons, makes choices and applies fundamentals to his learning.
In the middle years at Christ Church, the boys’ transition from play based learning to a more structured learning environment. They develop skills to think logically, make connections, think in more abstract terms and undertake sustained activities for longer periods of time.
-
Years 5 to 6 - Responsibility, Initiative and Connections
He continues to take responsibility for learning while exploring his character.
Teaching and learning in the upper years progresses with a focus on the boys taking responsibility for their growth and development in all aspects of school life. Their sense of self is further developed by exploring their character and making connections with their social and emotional learning. Leadership opportunities provide the boys with experiences to guide their peers by utilising their understanding of the School’s values that underpin the whole boy.
Inspiring Young Minds
Teaching Methods
Teachers combine play-based pedagogy with structured and intentional teaching, designed to engage, motivate and empower boys. Lessons are tailored to meet the needs of individual students and their cohorts.
Students are immersed in hands-on experiences that encourage exploration, questioning, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication. Literacy, numeracy, and investigative skills are developed through a blend of child-led inquiry and curriculum requirements. Specialist teaching in Art, Music, Physical Education, Mandarin, and Library begins in the early years, with Drama and Dance introduced from Pre-Primary, and Innovation from Year 1.
Each student has a comprehensive learning profile created through observation, assessment, and screening, allowing targeted support or extension for those with specific learning needs.
Beyond the Classroom
Learning Environment
Indoor and outdoor spaces are intentionally designed to promote engagement, collaboration, investigation, and discovery. Taking advantage of our proximity to the Swan River, nature-based learning is integrated into the program, with recognition of the site’s Aboriginal cultural significance.
The unpredictable and ever-changing natural environment encourages positive risk-taking, resilience, self-awareness, and confidence. These experiences not only nurture students’ curiosity and wonder but also contribute to their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth.
Learning at Christ Church extends beyond the classroom to the sports field, nature spaces, and community settings, ensuring students feel supported, valued, and ready to embrace the world around them.
